The basics of what a person needs to know for first belt are                                      

Fall Breaking. Every student learns how to fall break for their own protection.

You learn the  front mugs:

1. double hand choke
2. single hand choke (one hand pulled back to punch)
3. grabbing hair (hand back to punch)
4. shoulder grab
5. Lapel grab
6. Double Lapel grab
7. Double wrist grab
8. single wrist grab
9. cross wrist grab



You learn the first 5 rear mugs:

1. one arm choking, the other arm hold wrist to side
2. Bear hug around waist
3. one arm choking, the other arm hold wrist at side (same as first mug but using different moves)
4. both arms choking, pulling person backwards over hip or knee
5. Drag Back (when a mugger holds around neck and holds wrist and pulls you backwards (also done with hand covering mouth))
 

In total there are 30 mugs from behind

Also, you will learn to disarm:

Basic Knife:
1. Blade along side of throat
2. Blade across throat
3. Blade across wrist
4. Rambo style
5. Knife to stomach
 

Moving Knife:
1. Knife being thrust at stomach
2. Knife being slashed across stomach/chest
3. Knife to top of head in downward motion

Basic Club:
1. Club to top of head in downward motion
2. Club to side of face
3. Threatening with club

This is the basic for every beginner because There is no telling when and where a person will get mugged. These mugs all use the same basic moves and show the transition from one move to the next. It allows even a beginner to be able to have basic self defense ideas when they walk out of class the first day. As training progresses students learn to shift from on move to the next seamlessly as well as defend from different styles of attacks.

Adults:

After attaining your black belt you go through degrees to show your teaching ability and effectiveness. That is to say if you are an excellent teacher and your technique is solid you will be awarded your second degree black belt.
